A new study suggests that fitness fades fast after 45. In the study, published in Archives of Internal Medicine, using a treadmill test, researchers looked at cardiorespiratory fitness (of 3,429 women and 16,889 men ages 20 to 96. They found that cardiorespiratory fitness spiraled downward after age 45, especially for adults with a higher body mass index and those who smoked and didn t exercise much. Being out of shape as you age increases your risk of several diseases and makes you less likely to function on your own, so even if you haven t exercised in a while, ask your healthcare provider about safe activities you can try to boost your physical fitness at any age.

Sugar revs up blood pressure
You know that eating lots of sugary foods is bad for your waistline. It may, however, pose another health threat: high blood pressure. In a study presented at the American Society of Nephrology s 42nd Annual Meeting, researchers examined 4,528 adults ages 18 and older with no history of high blood pressure and looked at how much of the sugar fructose they consumed from foods such as juice, soda, baked goods and candy. What they found: People who ate or drank more than 73 grams of fructose a day (the equivalent of two-and-a-half sugary sodas) had a much higher risk of developing high blood pressure. To keep your blood pressure in a healthy range, try cutting back on soft drinks, baked goods and other foods and beverages that contain added sugars, and stick to naturally sweetened fruit.

Tackling fat and fitness

For today s football players, bulking up is the ticket to success but at what cost? Recent research presented at the American College of Gastroenterology suggests larger professional athletes, especially football linemen, may be at risk for metabolic syndrome (when you have three or more heart disease risk factors). The study compared 69 current professional football players to 155 minor and major league baseball players and revealed that football linemen were more likely to have higher fasting blood sugar levels, larger waist circumferences and a greater waist-to-height ratio. It may seem strange for professional athletes who exercise regularly and should be in top physical shape to be at risk for heart disease. But many of these players tip the scales at over 300 pounds much of that fat and rigorous exercise may not be enough to combat the negative effects of the extra weight. The bottom line: Being fat is not fit.

The hipbone s connected to the & heart?

Prepare yourself for a double surprise: If you suffer from heart failure or stroke, the risk for hip fractures rises not just for you, but it may also rise for your close relatives as well. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers looked at 31,936 Swedish twins and found that those who had heart failure had more than four times the risk for hip fractures and those who had a stroke were about five times more at risk compared with people who had no signs of heart disease. Researchers also found that if one twin had a cardiovascular condition, the other twin was at greater risk for hip fracture even if he or she was healthy. Researchers say that genetic factors may be at the root of this phenomenon and that the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis may be connected to heart disease. More research is needed to further examine this link.

COPYRIGHT © 2010 DEBORAH HEART AND LUNG CENTER.
